Most of my friends are well educated and are doing well in their chosen sphere of expertise. Probably that is because I don’t take the opportunity to interact with many people outside my sphere of familiarity. However I am still surprised how people are still bound by virtual societal obligations of doing things the existing morally correct way. The more surprising fact is that people with a relative good educational background are stuck with the existing notion without any willingness to question the existing dogmas unless it affects our own self.
It brings to my mind the question-what our educational institutions are doing? And more importantly what the parents of the people sending their kids to these institutions are expecting? It reminds me of Orwell’s 1984 where generations of complying, robotic citizens with lack of freedom of free thoughts were being created. The message conveyed by the book becomes more relevant when we consider the fact that the kids of our generation are called delusional when they question the beliefs which in turn was brought about by the same education which their parents have sent them to achieve. Knowledge is so easy to obtain compared to our parents time. Also what is easily available is the opinion of our peers from all over the world. Yet some of the decisions made by our generation seem so wrong. A crusade in my country against corruption has turned up to be a facade in popularistic anarchism. People are jumping at the opportunity to be treated specially, while protesting vehemently against others given the same opportunity. All these bring just one question to my mind-is common sense not so common any more? Our parents argue, they have more experience than us, thus can make better decisions. Have we given them a opportunity to be proven otherwise?
Are a hundred guns more effective than a thousand voices of reason? Why can equality be established on the basis of birth and not on the basis of economic disparity? Why do the short term gains always outweigh the long term future of our next generation. Can a little sacrifice at a time from us save long term future hardships? If so, how much are we willing to concede? How much are we willing to compromise? So many questions, answers of which are buried in our minds. Equality, selflessness, diligence, patriotism, common sense and forward thinking-these qualities should be ingrained in every individual. Education should hone these skills, not be a mere stepping stone to a monetary rewarding career. Something is wrong, the answer is before our eyes, but we are too blind to our faults to see them.
